Southover is an independent pre-school based in the heart of Woodside Park in leafy green surroundings. The pre-school has been running since 1968 and we have places for children aged between 21 months old and five years. The teaching team is highly qualified with over 30 years of experience between them. The staff are able to provide the children in our setting with a rich, stimulating and varied curriculum based on the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. All learning opportunities offered to your child are ‘play-based’ as current research has shown that children at this age and stage of development learn best through play.

Smelling Activity

Materials: Food items like watermelon, banana, orange, lemon, bread, strawberry etc.  A handkerchief for blindfolding the child

Method: Cut the food items up. Now blind fold the child and place the food items one by one in front of their nose and see how many food items they can recognise

Squirty Chalk

Materials 

  • Squirt bottles
  • Corn starch
  • Baking soda
  • Food colouring or washable watercolors
  • Vinegar

Method

You will want to use six squirt bottles to make the magic colour changing chalk.  Fill three of the squirt bottles 2/3 of the way with a baking soda and corn starch mixture.  I free poured and used roughly the same amount of both ingredients.

Add a few drops of food colouring to each bottle, and then fill them the rest of the way with water.  You will want to make one red, one blue, and one yellow chalk.  Use a butter knife or similar to stir the chalk, and then place the cap on and shake the bottles well.

Fill the remaining three bottles with vinegar and add food colouring to each bottle.  You will want one red, one yellow, and one blue vinegar.
